In today's video, I’m showing you my favorite 3 exercises for getting a CLEAN onset when singing!
We always enjoy answering your questions, and I received one recently I HAD to answer:
“I’ve had several people tell me that I need to force my cords together when I sing how do i do it?”
Well, my immediate answer to that is don't ever force your cords to do anything! A nice clean healthy onset is number one when it comes to singing, and lots of singers are confused about how to get there. One of the easiest places to start is to remember that there is an element of singing that is just like talking. Now obviously it’s not quite that simple, but let me try to make that clearer by asking you three fundamental questions:
- When you talk about an onset or getting your cords together?
- do you do a lot of preparation when you talk?
- do you go through some big setup; do you go through a major thought process when you just say some words?
I’m guessing no!
No you don’t, that's because you breathe and you talk and your cords just come together naturally. You don't have to force them together, you simply breath and talk. Obviously singing is more complicated than that, but it’s a good place to start if you’re confused about onset. I got into more detail in this quick video, I hope it helps!
